A CORNER OF HOME

In the days that have passed and the days that are to come, we'll all be spending more time indoors. A Corner of Home collects photographic studies and new works made by artists in their immediate environments; small snapshots of the impulse to create.

1. Where are you living at the moment and how has that environment shaped you creatively? Can you tell us about a favourite detail of this place and why?
Phelim Hoey: Two weeks ago I left my small studio in Amsterdam. It is just too small and dark to spend too much time in, so I left for my mom’s place in the countryside. Here there is a lot of space, a lot of light and she has a small garden. The first days I spent most of the time chilling in the garden, reading, writing down ideas and doing sketches. I'd say the garden, and it's small corners, are my favourite thing here.
2. How have you looked at the materials of home differently in the past weeks? Are there parts of it that have revealed themselves to you in new ways?
After one week here I went back to Amsterdam to pick up some personal things and my cameras. I also picked up some of the walking aid materials I had been photographing in my studio in Amsterdam. Now that I brought them here I started using them in a different way as the whole context is more 'homely' and lighter.
3. Tell us about how you’ve been using photography lately? What are you making or putting in front of the lens?
Mostly the walking aid materials. I want to make some new constructions after the weekend (I was busy the last couple of days with freelance assignments that needed finishing). After the weekend I also want to continue working on my ceramics body parts here in the garden. I wonder what this new environment will do for my project in the coming weeks.
